Young Living’s Purification is an essential oil blend that is meant to purify the air. Whether it be lingering odors of last night’s dinner, a stinky gym bag or bad smells coming from a stuffy office, Purification is known to work as an air freshener. In this blog post I’ve recreated the fresh scent of this essential oil blend for improving indoor air quality. With a blend of citronella, lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, rosemary and myrtle this homemade blend is like a breath of fresh air!
As I’ve stated many times before, I was introduced to the therapeutic benefits of essential oils by a friend selling Young Living. I quickly fell in love with Thieves Blend and Purification Blend. We’ve already DIY’d Thieves, so I thought it was high time we figure out a homemade blend of Purification. YL’s Purification blend has the best scent. It’s light and herbaceous while having undertones of a spicy aroma. Not to mention a magical oil to diffuse because it really does eliminate household odors!
Using other’s essential oil blend recipes and my sense of smell, I came up with my own recipe that I believe smells similar to the original blend.
According to Young Living:
Created by Young Living Founder D. Gary Young, this blend was crafted to purify the air. Purification combines Citronella, Lavandin, Lemongrass, Rosemary Oil, Myrtle, and Tea Tree to uplift and invigorate the atmosphere. The plant sources for these oils come from many exotic and beautiful locations: Lemongrass is native to India, Guatemala, and other tropical countries; and Citronella originated in Sri Lanka. Purification utilizes these natural resources to brighten and freshen any space.
• Citronella: Has a refreshing aroma
• Lemongrass: Has a purifying aroma
• Tea Tree: Helps eliminate musky odors
Why Use Purification Essential Oil Blend?
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t need a little help when it comes to unpleasant odors in their home. No matter how clean you are, stink just happens. I’m particularly concerned about my home smell thanks to accidentally turning our home into a cat sanctuary. LOL. I love using my DIY Linen Spray (it is one of my absolute favorite DIYs) but I find that when it comes to the air quality, diffusing is the most effective way to change the smell in your home (or car) quickly!
Purification not only covers bad odors, it eliminates them. Clean air can be tough to come by especially in the winter months or hot days when you can’t get your windows open. It’s helpful to create room sprays and use this blend in a diffuser to improve the quality of the air.
Did you know that when you diffuse essential oils you are actually killing airborne bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus? Essential oils can even neutralize the smell of cigarette smoke.
What Essential Oils Make Up Purification?
Purification has a zesty aroma with sweet and spicy notes. Some would call it exotic with the strong scent of lemongrass. Lavender oil, tea tree oil, myrtle oil, rosemary oil and a hint of citronella give it a pleasant aroma making it a great oil to eliminate stale smells.
Lemongrass has been shown to purify the air. Tea tree has powerful antimicrobial power and has been shown effective in killing airborne flu viruses especially when diffused.
Young Living found the perfect blend of essential oils you’ll want to keep on hand to keep unwanted odors at bay. Whether you add it to a room spray, cleaning spray or simply diffuse it-this DIY Purification Blend recipe will be your ultimate weapon when it comes to a clean home.
This potent blend of essential oils act as a natural disinfectant due to their strong antifungal properties and antibacterial properties.
How Does Diffusing Purify the Air?
When a diffuser is running, negative ions are released into the air. Negative ions latch onto positive ions and neutralize them. Positive ions are the toxins in the air.
Carpet, furniture, paint, appliances, beauty products, cleaning products, dust, pollen and so on all contribute to low air quality.
Why Make Your Own Essential Oil Blends?
It’s convenient to buy essential oil blends and companies such as Plant Therapy and Mountain Rose Herbs offer so many lovely blends that make it easy to apply or diffuse. However, sometimes I like to make my own blends because it’s a great way to use essential oils I bought years ago that I don’t seem to have much use for. It’s also (depending on which essential oil company you use) a way to save money. It is an investment up front but you can make so many bottles of a particular blend at a fraction of what a pre made blend would cost.
Purification costs $23.36 for a 5ml bottle. I read an article (which I can’t find to link) that said that making a bottle of Purification using individual oils bought from Plant Therapy would cost you around $9.
How to Use DIY Purification Blend:
- Diffusing is the number one best way to use this blend in my opinion. Purifcation is a favorite diffuser blend.
- Add to a spray bottle with some distilled water and vodka. (follow my DIY Air Freshener Recipe)
- Put several drop of oil to a cotton ball and place in closets, drawers and even stinky shoes!
- Add a few drops to laundry detergent.
- Add a few drops of purification oil to trash cans and diaper pails.
- Use in my DIY Thieves Disinfectant Spray (in the place of Thieves) for a multipurpose cleaning spray.
- Add a few drops to a damp washcloth and throw in the dryer instead of using a dryer sheet.
- Add a few drops to cotton balls and stick in your air vents at home or in the car.
- Diffuse on a patio to ward off bugs.
- Put 2-3 drops inside the toilet paper roll to freshen the bathroom!
Applying Purification to the Skin:
Purification Blend can also be applied topically. It is a great blend to use on skin irritation. Be sure to dilute this blend by applying a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil on top of the blend. It has been said that Purification is able to neutralize venom from spiders, mosquitos, bees, hornets and wasps. By applying it topically, healing is accelerated because the oils help regenerate damaged cells and bring added circulation to wounds.
What You’ll Need to Make a DIY Purification Essential Oil Blend:

Essential Oil Substitutions:
Citrus oils are effective at ridding the air of microbes. While lemongrass does not smell similar to lemon oil, lemon essential oil is a great substitute for lemongrass if your main goal is air purifications.
If you don’t have Myrtle essential oil and would prefer not to purchase it you can omit it. Myrtle is a lovely oil and has been shown to be helpful with thyroid issues. It is a more expensive oil and Plant Therapy does not carry Myrtle.
Where to get the Best Essential Oils:
When using essential oils, high quality, organic oils are a must. I typically get my essential oils from Plant Therapy. I love that they offer organic oils that are affordable. Plus they offer fast and free shipping. You can use my code JENNIRAINCLOUD to get 10{2ac9033caf61aa83cf45584f992fcbdbe657ee6f770037f39c3ded45073822b8} off your order!
