Valentine’s Day Rose Perfumes 2024 image by Steven

Roses have been used in perfumery for thousands of years and is the flower most associated with romance and seduction.

Cleopatra and Antony

Antony and Cleopatra. Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. 1883 Pixels

Cleopatra famously carpeted her boudoir with rose petals while entertaining Marc Antony, so he would always think of the Egyptian Queen anytime, anywhere he smelled a rose. There is a rose fragrance for everyone…vintage, gourmand, photorealistic, soliflore, fruity, modern, spicy, sophisticated, jammy, oudy, chypre, and downright dirty. In honor of Valentine’s Day, Steven and Michelyn chose the rose perfumes that are closest to our hearts. Here are Steven’s and Michelyn’s co-curated choices for three of the best Valentine’s Day Rose Perfumes 2024 you should be wearing. -Michelyn Camen. Editor-in-Chief

Amouage Lyric for Men (Daniel Visentin): Lyric opens with a refreshing lime note that eventually evolves into the heart of gentle rose and quirky angelica. The galbanum resin contributes to the verdant tones while a medley of spices, which include ginger, saffron, and nutmeg, create the mystery. The base of vanilla and sandalwood is rich and inviting, and the frankincense adds to the meditative charm. With Lyric for Men being a favorite of the late Carlos Powell, The Brooklyn Fragrance Lover, it was included in our Valentine’s Day Rose Perfumes 2024 in memory of the three-year anniversary of his passing. –Steven

Notes: Bergamot, lime, rose, angelica, orange blossom, green galbanum, spicy ginger, nutmeg, saffron, pine, sandalwood, vanilla, musk, and frankincense

Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur Extrait (Neela Vermeire and Bertrand Duchaufour): For those who know me, I am not a rose perfume fan. I don’t really love the flower itself. I owned Guerlain Nahema (1979) with its peachy voluptuous sensuality. Then it was gone.

There are echoes of Nahema in Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur Extrait, not in its composition but in its brilliance. Look past the obvious inspiration of melding East and Western sensibilities; its greatness and absolute perfection stands on its own. The true Queen of Flowers is crowned in spice, then bathed in benzoin and rich amber.  Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur Extrait is the voice of someone I loved and the plaintiff echoes of a melody that I can’t get out of my head. Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur Extrait is similar to Neela’s original Mohur, but deeper, richer and absolutely unforgettable. I don’t think of it as rose perfume, but as a religious experience. If you are like me and shy away when you read that a fragrance has notes of rose and oud…. Mohur Extrait will change your mind. It is truly one of the Valentine’s Day Rose Perfumes you must sample in 2024. –Michelyn

Notes: cardamom, coriander, ambrette, carrot, black pepper, elemi, Turkish rose oiljasmine, hawthorn, almond milk accord, leathersandalwood, amber, patchouli, Oudh Palao from Laos, benzoin, vanilla, and tonka bean

Ormonde Jayne Ta’if (Geza Schoen): One of the first niche rose perfumes I bought was Ta’if composed Geza Schoen for Ormonde Jayne. It was released in 2004 and only available at the shop in London. Creative Director and founder Linda Pilkington kindly sent me a sample for an article I was writing at the time, and from first sniff I was and still am smitten; it has always been one of my favorite rose perfumes. Tumultuous and temperamental, with an edgy combination of spicy saffron and sweet dates afloat an orange blossom scented sea. If you want to blend in at a party, this is not the perfume to wear…it is audacious, opulent and sweeps into a room like the star it is. –Michelyn

Notes: pink pepper, saffron, dates, taif rose, patchouli, tree moss, oud, vanilla rose accord, freesia, orange flower absolute and jasmine, Ugandan vanilla absolute, broom and amber
