Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114 collage by Michelyn (images via Histoires de Parfums)

Late Autumn is upon us and the holiday season has already begun. During this time of year, warm and resinous fragrances are especially welcome.  I have known Gerald Ghislain, the founder and Creative Director of Histoires de Parfums, since he launched his collection in the USA at the sadly closed emporium of niche and indie perfumery, Takashimiya in New York City in 2008. Creating an amber fragrance that’s genderless can be a challenge. Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114, from  the brand’s “Cult Book” collection was launched in 2001 and for me, is a reference amber perfume. I consider it one of the best amber perfumes of the past 25 years. Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114 is complex; sweet, spicy, aromatic, earthy, woody, and balsamic. With exceptional longevity, it’s lasts from first application well into the long chilly nights. Can one amber perfume be all things to everyone? Ambre 114 just might be it. Don’t turn the page on it.–Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief
