Kajal Perfumes Jihan Image by Karl.

Kajal Perfumes has been a brand on my “must try list” for some time. Primarily because of the striking presentation and forthright approach to creating bold perfumes with clear olfactory messages. The Warde Collection is inspired by florals and as such Jihan is a wood/floral/spicy composition. Jihan can be translated as ‘The Universe’ and one certainly experiences this perfume as expansive in nature. Moe Khalaf {Founder and Kajal Creative Officer) enlisted the talents of perfumer Valerie Garnuch-Mentzel (Drom) to create an intensely rich floral with a strong amber base to it.

Kajal Perfumes Jihan is a sojourn away from my typical go to scent profiles and a new experience for me. I have always found rose to be a tricky note to wear when it is prominent and there are few in my collection that I have as a staple perfume. Kajal Jihan is an evening wear / special occasion scent for me. It has a specific dark element running throughout, namely the saffron. This comes across immediately and gives a strong spiciness which is offset with the fruity apple blossom in the opening. The saffron kick is front and center and harmonizes well with the clove and patchouli as the fragrance transitions. The rose here is lush and jam like making Jihan extremely velvety and in combination with the vanilla and musk (synthetic) in the base produces a smooth and sweet aroma.

As the hours pass Kajal Jihan transforms into a scent heavy with woods and on my skin the saffron (prevalent throughout), adds a soft suede touch as it mingles with the creamy aspects of sandalwood; further enhanced with musk, patchouli and the oud accord. To my nose this accord comes off similar to Initio Oud For Greatness and keeps Kajal Perfumes Jihan in the more accessible realm as opposed to the more funky aspects of certain strains of agarwood. This makes the wearing more pleasing to those who find oud a difficult note to carry.

The Middle-Eastern influence is clear in Kajal Perfumes Jihan, as whilst it is incredibly potent it also has a dusty and warm feel to it. The signature beauty of the composition is the saffron which is used in traditional dishes and represents the soul of the scent. What makes Jihan very appealing is that it has no rough edges, transitions smoothly and performs outstandingly. It is unisex and whilst the spice/wood combination may be more apparent on my skin, I can imagine the intense florals and sweeter aspects of the fragrance will be to the fore on floral and  rose perfume aficionados.

Notes: Saffron, apple blossom, clove, magnolia, rose, patchouli, sandalwood, musk, vanilla, oud accord.
