Shivoo:

1) a party, celebration

2) a disturbance, a rowdy party ~ Urban Dictionary

Well, my friends, the time has come
To raise the roof and have some fun
Throw away the work to be done
Let the music play on (play on, play on, play on…)
Everybody sing, everybody dance
Lose yourself in wild romance
We’re going to Party, Karamu, Fiesta, forever
Come on and sing along! ~ from Lionel Richie, All Night Long (1983)

Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co.

Artisan botanical perfumer Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co. is known for composing archetypal natural fragrances which satisfy our collective craving for art + wearability. It is fair to say that Charna is a true American original, and her work reflects this. She first began her career as a perfumer in 2009, and has been inflaming our imaginations ever since; her fragrant releases have found a grateful audience Providence Perfume Co Shivoo, is indeed gourmand in nature – but à la Charna – meaning that it bears the perfumer’s stamp of originality and exquisite materials, no expense spared. It’s a party in a bottle: the party may be raucous and raise the roof, but that doesn’t preclude a certain sophistication.

Providence Perfume Co. Shivoo is defined as a rowdy party or gathering, and is thought to be derived from the French phrase “chez vous”, meaning “your house”, or “at your house.” The word shivoo pops up in Australian conversation, and was in usage in 18th C. England: all the rest is conjecture. Charna wanted to create something festive and playful for this celebratory season, and Shivoo fills the bill nicely: wonderfully familiar, but with that unexpected twist which distinguishes Charna from the herd.

It’s no mystery that roses and raspberries have long been an item: they share certain innate characteristics and complete one another. When they mingle, it’s as if the rose expands and fleshes out its fruity rondeur. This is how Providence Perfume Co Shivoo commences – gaily and effusively, liberally sprinkled with a very epicurian cocoa note. In fact, the entire composition of Shivoo consists of rose’s beloved compadres; there’s not one amongst them which isn’t a perfect fit. Rose-chocolate, rose-patchouli, rose-amber, rose-ambrette: take your pick, or not – as each of these aromatic voices are included, saving you the conundrum of having to choose just one. Even if you feel these particular rose combinations have wearied your senses, you’ll do well to reassess: simply because lists of notes may appear similar does not mean that the fragrances which share them will smell alike. (I cannot emphasize this enough, and believe that this is a popular misconception.) The charm of Providence Perfume Co. Shivoo lies in Charna’s ability to render a conventional concept fresh and exhilarating. Shivoo possesses a modern sensibility while retaining the beauty of the early Les Parfums de Rosine (many who have experienced them find the older Rosines to be wistfully entrancing and chockablock with gorgeous botanical materials). Providence Perfume Co. Shivoo might be just what you’re looking for to kick-start the holiday season. N.B. – beware those who might be tempted to nibble you when you wear this… Notes: raspberry, rose, cocoa, amber , patchouli, botanical musk

Sample provided by the perfumer – many thanks! It’s delicious. My nose is my own…
