The iconic Blue Marble photograph of Earth, taken in 1972 by the crew of Apollo 17, has become symbolic of earth’s fragility and the environmental activism focused on its protection. One such safeguarding project is the Gaia hypothesis, proposed by scientists James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which holds that Earth is one enormous ecosystem, comprised of many, smaller interlocking systems. Together, they represent a dynamic network that allows life on Earth to self-regulate and create optimum conditions for the advancement of life. Discoveries based on these theories are being used today to study climate change and to understand how susceptible our Earth is to the effects of human activity. Perfumer Diane St. Clair has been inspired by these environmental breakthroughs to find a new and exhilarating artistic bearing with her latest release, St. Clair Scents Blue Marble.

According to perfumer Diane St. Clair, “Blue Marble represents the beauty, complexity, and fragility of Earth’s intertwining systems throughs scent. Comprised of 7 accords representing oceans, soil, cold flowers, wet rocks, woods, green plants and metals, it allows us to think and experience the intersection of these endangered ecosystems personally, as they move across our skin, through time and space.”

The innovative structure of St. Clair Scents Blue Marble captures the feeling of viewing our majestic planet from space by opening with a cold aldehydic blast of bergamot cut with a metallic edge of Dihydromyrcenol®. Cooling clove adds to the supersonic chill from first sprays. We descent through the atmosphere to rediscover our home planet. Quick terpenic lifts are maintained throughout the fragrance as watery green notes begin to emerge with liquid geosmin. It is the smell of rain arriving through the heavy air as the earth wakes to receive the storm.

Sheer florals bloom in the heart of St. Clair Scents Blue Marble. Geranium lends an ozonic tone to the misty bouquet of elderflower, jasmine, and muguet. Here the wet rock accord adds its fossilized amber notes with slightly smoked aldehydes and ionic ambergris that floats an iodine nuance into our cloud of diaphanous florals.

Warmth from the floral heart begins to slowly rise off my skin about 3 hours after my first spray. Petitgrain, narcissus, and elderflower weave warmth like a silken thread through the ozonic mists of materials to the dry down. Beeswax brings a complex sweetness to the blend. Violet leaf and coumarin create a startlingly beautiful sweet green grass and hay moment. Javanol® adds a natural richness and grounding to the entire fragrance, reminding us that we are all anchored to this same precious earth we call home. St. Clair Scents Blue Marble is a perfume that makes us aware of the beauty and precarity that surrounds us.
